Nerve pain that travels down the leg, assessed and treated at the source.
Rehab & Revive treats sciatica — pain radiating from the lower back into the leg — at our Phase 7, Mohali clinic and via home visits across Mohali and Chandigarh. Appointments: +91 77728-00068.
Sciatica is pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve — usually starting in the lower back or buttock and radiating down the back of the leg, sometimes as far as the foot. It happens when the nerve is irritated or compressed, most often related to a disc problem in the lower back or tightness in the muscles around the hip.
The pain can range from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation, and it is sometimes accompanied by numbness or tingling. This page describes sciatica in general terms — an assessment is needed to understand your specific case.
A disc in the lower back bulging or pressing near the nerve root is one of the most common causes of sciatic pain.
Reduced movement and stiffness in the lower spine can narrow the space around the nerve and contribute to irritation.
Tightness in muscles deep in the buttock can sit close to the sciatic nerve and irritate it directly.
Long periods sitting, particularly with poor posture, can aggravate both the lower back and the nerve pathway.
Assessment looks at where the pain travels, which movements ease or worsen it, and how your nerve, back, and leg are responding. Treatment generally combines gentle techniques aimed at nerve and spinal mobility, targeted exercise, and advice on posture and movement to reduce ongoing irritation.
How quickly things settle varies a great deal between people, and your physiotherapist will build a plan around your assessment rather than a generic timeline.
Your physiotherapist will ask where the pain travels, what positions or movements change it, and whether you have noticed any numbness or weakness. They will assess your back movement, nerve response, and leg strength, then discuss the findings and agree a plan with you.
Most sciatica can be assessed and managed with physiotherapy, but a rare, serious nerve emergency needs urgent hospital care. Seek emergency care immediately if leg pain or numbness comes with any of the following:
This list is general safety guidance, not a way to self-diagnose. If in doubt, seek medical assessment rather than waiting.
If your pain stays mainly in the lower back rather than travelling down the leg, our back pain physiotherapy page may be a closer match.
Tell us where the pain travels and how long it has been going on. We will book the right assessment slot — at the clinic or at your home.
